Abstract

Mariachi is a traditional musical group originating in Jalisco, Mexico in the nineteenth century. The groups are easy to recognize with their flashy matching costumes and large sombreros. These groups of men would play festivities such as weddings and holidays as well as funerals. Mariachi groups with all women started to arise during the 1950s and 60s and have continued to grow since then. Women in mariachi have had to fight for their place as performers by using their talent along with their femininity. Now, all female mariachi groups have achieved great success and continue to thrive.
